Islamabad: Pakistan has called for an immediate halt to violence in Sudan, urging renewed efforts for a Sudanese-owned and Sudanese-led political process.
According to Radio Pakistan, the call was made by Pakistan's Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Ambassador Asim Iftikhar Ahmad, during a statement at the UN Security Council meeting focused on the situation in Sudan. He strongly condemned the attacks by the Rapid Support Forces on civilians and civilian infrastructure, warning of the imminent risk of mass atrocities.
The Ambassador called on the Rapid Support Forces to refrain from further escalation and fully comply with international humanitarian law. He also expressed concern over the increasing use of drones and advanced weaponry, highlighting that it is causing greater civilian casualties, disrupting humanitarian operations, and increasing the risk of wider escalation.
Reiterating Pakistan's principled position, Ambassador Asim Iftikhar emphasized that Sudan's sovereignty, unity, territorial integrity, and national institutions must be preserved. He stated that there can be no military solution to the conflict and that Sudan's peace and stability are closely linked to the security of the broader African and Arab regions.
Ambassador Asim Iftikhar stressed that restoring stability in Sudan should be seen as a collective international responsibility. He reaffirmed Pakistan's continued support for the efforts of the United Nations, other bodies, and regional partners to end the conflict and help the country return to peace and constitutional order.
