Turkmenistan begins voting in parliamentary election

Ashgabat People in Turkmenistan started voting in a parliamentary election on Sunday, where a total of 284 candidates are competing for 125 seats in parliament.

More than 3.2 million voters were registered in the gas-rich Central Asian country. The vote takes place at 2,600 polling stations, 39 of which opened at the Turkmen diplomatic missions and consular offices abroad.

The Central Election Commission will announce the results of the parliamentary election no later than the seventh day after the vote. In Turkmenistan, there are three parties, namely the Democratic Party, the Agrarian Party and the Party of Industrialists and entrepreneurs. According to the country's constitution, members of the parliament are elected for a five-year term.

It is to be mentioned that in February last year, President Gurbanguly Berdymukhamedov won a third term in a presidential election with a crushing landslide of more than 97 percent.
