SHC seeks comments in blasphemy case

Karachi: The Sindh High Court SHC on Wednesday directed deputy inspector general of police south, and then SHO of Kalakot police station to file comments in a contempt of court application for not registering a case against former home minister under the blasphemy law.

The court also issued notice to the proposed accused, former home minister Dr Zulfiqar Mirza, and his counsel to file comments in this regard.

A single bench of SHC comprising Justice Aqeel Ahmed Abbasi heard the application of MQM leader Rauf Siddiqui seeking contempt of court proceedings against the police for not complying with a court order regarding registration of a case against Dr Mirza.

The applicant submitted that court had ordered police on Dec 7, 2012 to record his statement under Section 154 of the criminal procedure code and lodges a case if the information of the applicant shows any cognizable offence.

He submitted that his statement was recorded, but despite the passage of around three weeks, the police had not lodged the case.

He prayed to the court to initiate contempt of court proceedings against DIG South and the then Kalakot SHO, Javed Baloch.
