Imran Khan’s party resigns from National Assembly of Pakistan

The party of Pakistan’s former prime minister Imran Khan announced that it was resigning from the National Assembly on Monday, in a move that could unleash further political turmoil. Khan approved the decision which was announced at the outset of the proceedings by former foreign minister Shah Mahmood Qureshi. Qureshi said Pakistan Tehrek-e-Insaf (PTI) rejected the process of electing a new prime minister and that the party was withdrawing from the proceedings. Following Qureshi’s withdrawal, Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz leader Shehbaz Sharif is the only candidate standing in the election.
