ADB to provide BISP $200m aid

ISLAMABAD: While expressing satisfaction on the pace of inclusion of beneficiaries families, Asian Development Bank ADB has decided to provide BISP with a further financial support of $200 million.

This was informed by Michael Van Der Awera, Financial Sector Specialist, the head of Mission of ADB , during a meeting with Federal Minister and Chairperson Benazir Income Support Programme BISP Madame Farzana Raja at BISP Secretariat Thursday.

Beside others Joao Farinha Fernandes, Financial Sector Specialist & Mr. Chris Chamberlin, International Social Safety Net Specialist were also present on the occasion. The Mission is on a two week visit to Pakistan to identify various areas to provide further support to BISP including registration of the remaining 2.5 million eligible BISP beneficiaries and to strengthen BISP’s graduation programmes, including vocational training, health insurance, additional cash transfer etc.

Earlier Chairperson BISP informed the Mission about various strategies adopted by BISP and said that we are committed to abide by our promise to the people of Pakistan.

She said that I am satisfied at the end of our five years term that we have fulfilled the promise made with the people of Pakistan and we will continue to serve the people in future as well.

Chairperson BISP Madame Farzana Raja said that the poverty survey has been completed in the 5 agencies of FATA and 2 lac beneficiaries families have been identified from these areas. She added further that the minorities of Pakistan’s have been provided equal opportunities for the very first time through BISP. She said that the state of art technology i.e. Benazir Debit Card has further strengthened the transparency of programme.

The Mission would also hold meetings with other stakeholders including NADRA, State Life Insurance Corporation, PPAF, NAVTEC and other partner organizations of BISP. It is worth mentioning here that ADB’s assistance of $ 200 million under social protection development project would span over five years.
