Protests, sit-ins disturb routine life in Karachi

Karachi: Protests, sit-ins and roads blockades in different parts of the city on Monday, following the call of Shia Ulema Council of a peaceful strike, disturbed the routine life in the city. Road blockades created immense troubles for people, especially those going to airport, railway stations, bus stops and hospitals.

Markets and bazaars in many areas remained closed, while attendance at offices was thin. Educational institutions remained shut. Karachi University and Federal Urdu University cancelled ongoing exams scheduled on Monday.

Many doctors, nurses and paramedics could not reach hospitals due to blockage of road access. Public transport remained off roads, while many petrol pumps and gas stations closed.

A large number people belonging to different organizations staged sit-ins on roads in different areas of Karachi. They were protesting the killings of innocent people in Quetta.

Sindh Home Department had announced ban on pillion riding and mobile phone networks were closed till Monday evening.

Police said some unidentified miscreants burnt a minibus on Jail Road near New Town area.

In some areas citizen faced problems to buy groceries and other day use items due to closure of markets on two consecutive days.

Later on, Shia Ulema Council announced to end strike, and subsequently road blockades were lifted and stranded citizens breathed a sigh of relief.
