Islamabad:President Asif Ali Zardari has presented the Nishan-e-Imtiaz, one of Pakistan's highest civil honors, to United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres in an investiture ceremony held in Islamabad. This award recognizes Guterres's outstanding international service, leadership, and contributions to global peace and development.
According to Radio Pakistan, this marks the first time Pakistan has bestowed such an honor on a UN Secretary-General. The ceremony was attended by notable figures including Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, Speaker of the National Assembly Sardar Ayaz Sadiq, Deputy Prime Minister Ishaq Dar, members of the Federal Cabinet, lawmakers, and members of the diplomatic corps.
During a meeting with Guterres, President Zardari emphasized Pakistan's commitment to peace and stability in South Asia. He underlined the need for sustained dialogue between Pakistan and India to resolve disputes, particularly the Jammu and Kashmir issue, in line with UN resolutions and the aspirations of the Kashmiri people.
President Zardari also reiterated that the Indus Waters Treaty is a binding international agreement and stressed that water should not be used as a political tool. He emphasized Pakistan's water rights as recognized by international courts.
Highlighting Pakistan's diplomatic efforts, the President spoke of the importance of dialogue and de-escalation in resolving regional conflicts. He also reaffirmed Pakistan's support for the Palestinian people's right to self-determination and appreciated Guterres's advocacy for a two-state solution.
On counter-terrorism, Zardari discussed the challenges Pakistan faces from groups operating in Afghan territory and stressed that Afghan soil should not be used against Pakistan or any other country. He also highlighted Pakistan's contributions to UN peacekeeping, with over 270,000 peacekeepers serving worldwide.
The President praised Guterres's leadership of the UN80 Initiative and supported efforts to reform the United Nations, emphasizing the need to protect developing countries' interests and accelerate sustainable development.
On climate change, Zardari called for enhanced global efforts in mitigation, adaptation, and finance. He also expressed Pakistan's support for democratic reforms in the United Nations Security Council, advocating for greater representation through elected, non-permanent members.
Finally, President Zardari appreciated Secretary-General Guterres's solidarity following the 2022 floods in Pakistan and his efforts to mobilize international aid. In response, Guterres acknowledged Pakistan's hospitality and resilience in facing terrorism and offering refuge to millions.
