Islamabad:The International Physical Protection Advisory Service Mission of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) to Pakistan has concluded its review in Islamabad, praising Pakistan for its cooperation and professionalism throughout the process.
According to Radio Pakistan, the mission was conducted at the invitation of the Pakistani government and was hosted by the Pakistan Nuclear Regulatory Authority. It was carried out in close coordination with the Pakistan Atomic Energy Commission and other relevant national organizations to ensure a comprehensive review of the country's national nuclear security regime.
The mission team, comprising international experts, assessed Pakistan's legal and regulatory framework on nuclear security. They also visited the KANUPP Decommissioning Project, which involves the former Karachi Nuclear Power Plant Unit-1.
The team leader of the International Physical Protection Advisory Service underscored the rewarding nature of the mission, emphasizing the in-depth examination of Pakistan's nuclear security protocols and their application. The IAEA Deputy Director General and Head of the Department of Nuclear Safety and Security recognized the successful completion of this first mission in Pakistan, highlighting it as a testament to the country's commitment to strengthening its nuclear security measures.
The IAEA acknowledged Pakistan's ongoing dedication to nuclear security and its positive engagement with the mission process. In response, the Chairman of the Pakistan Nuclear Regulatory Authority reaffirmed Pakistan's prioritization of nuclear safety and security. He noted that the mission's successful conduct reflects Pakistan's transparent and rigorous regulatory oversight and expressed readiness to share expertise globally to enhance international nuclear security and cooperation.
