Tokayev says Kazakhstan will remain an active OIC member

Kazakh Presidentelect KassymJomart Tokayev has confirmed that his country will remain an active member of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC), noting that Kazakhstan believes in working within the framework of cooperation with the OIC and its member states.

Tokayev made the remarks here on Monday evening following the official announcement of his victory in the presidential election that took place on Sunday, where seven candidates competed for the presidency in the Central Asian country.

The Presidentelect said Kazakhstan joined the Organization before its name was changed to become the Organization of Islamic Cooperation. He added that Kazakhstan hosted the first Islamic Summit on Science and Technology in 2017, underlining that his country would continue to cooperate with the OIC and that it has no problem in doing so.

Tokayev stated that Kazakhstan has strong relations with the Middle East countries, and that it pays great attention to the Middle Eastern issues and will continue its cooperation with the countries of the region, as well as with its neighbors including China and Russia.

He indicated that his country has strong relations with Russia, spelling out that these relations were established by former President Nursultan Nazarbayev with the presidents of Russia, Boris Yeltsin, Vladimir Putin and Dmitry Medvedev. Likewise, China, which has a huge economy, is a major partner of Kazakhstan in many projects, especially since Kazakhstan is a major part of the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI).

Tokayev expressed his satisfaction with the atmosphere in which the presidential election was held, describing it as a democratic and transparent election that took place in an open environment with the participation of all the Kazakh people and seven candidates vying for the presidency with equal opportunities.

"Voters voted freely and chose me for this responsibility, which I see as a huge and great responsibility that the people have entrusted me with it in the election after everyone presented their electoral platforms and visions for the future of the country," he said.

Tokayev said that he visited most of the country's regions during his election campaign, indicating that each region has its own character, issues and problems. Some of these problems are related to the environment and others are associated with poor salaries, he said, promising to tackle all of these problems.

The Kazakh Presidentelect pledged to move forward with the development process, raise the living standard of citizens, and complete the march of democracy, reform and the rule of law. He stressed the need to support young people and empower them because they are the future of the country.

Tokayev also vowed to continue the fight against corruption, which he considered one of the most serious challenges to countries, saying: "Corruption is a problem for us as we fight it, and my top priority is fighting corruption."

With regard to the first foreign trip after being elected as president, Tokayev said he would visit Kyrgyzstan on a previously scheduled trip, to attend the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) summit in Bishkek on June 14, before visiting Tajikistan's capital Dushanbe.
