SHC directs LEAs, ECP providing security to candidates

Karachi: The Sindh High Court SHC on Thursday directed law enforcing agencies and Election Commission of Pakistan ECP to provide effective security to the candidates.

A division bench headed by Chief Justice Mushir Alam was hearing the two separate polls petitions seeking adequate security. The court observed that in order to ensure free and fair elections, ECP can seek deployment of armed force.

Muhammad Ashraf Samo, president Malir Bar Association, who is contesting election from PS127 on PPPP ticket, has filed a petition submitting that 92 polling stations within his constituency have been declared sensitive. He submitted that several times he had written letter to district returning officer Malir for deployment of army within his constituency but no any heed was paid.

He contended that many polling stations within his constituency have been changed on behest of rival candidate belonging to Muttahida Qaumi Movement MQM, adding rival candidate in order to influence the elections have shifted polling stations to private schools as those schools belong to rival candidate.

In another petition filed by three other candidates, Zahid Saeed from NA251, Irfanullah Marwat from PS115, and Abdul Ghaffar from PS114 also requested court for the deployment of the army in their constituencies.

They submitted that several polling stations have been declared highly sensitive where army needs to be deployed on the polling day. They said that in order to influence the elections, biased election staff members belonging to Karachi Metropolitan Corporation KMC and Karachi Water and Sewerage Board KWSB have been assigned polling duty.

They prayed the court to direct ECP to assign election employees who are unbiased.
