KESC, PIA Join Hands on Energy Conservation, Sign MoU


Karachi: Karachi Electric Supply Company (KESC) signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) to engage a joint action plan for the implementation of efficient practices in energy conservation at PIA’s offices and installations.

The MoU was signed by KESC’s CEO Tabish Gauhar and Captain Junaid Younus, Managing Director PIA.

Speaking at the signing ceremony, Tabish Gauhar said that KESC would provide all possible technical assistance and support to PIA to ensure the earliest possible implementation of the efficiency and conservation program, aimed at saving the electricity consumption.

He underscored the importance of energy conservation and the impact it leaves on the environment, saying that, “A Megawatt saved is a Megawatt generated.

As per KESC’s initial energy audit of PIA’s head offices and training centre facilities, the national flag carrier is estimated to save around Rs.30 million per annum only through these two locations with the successful implementation of energy conservation initiatives and undertaking green efficiency measures. PIA also agreed to promote KESC’s energy conservation tips through its various offices and including conservation guidelines as part of their in-flight reading package.

Capt. Junaid Younus, MD PIA said that the two organizations would work in close collaboration through a joint task team and given the savings that are to accrue due to the adoption of these green efficiency measures, he wanted the energy conservation work to start as soon as possible. A joint project team comprising of management officials from both organizations, under the supervision of Director Energy Conservation KESC Asif Hussain Siddiqui, was formulated on the occasion of signing ceremony.

Under the terms of the MoU, PIA will ensure the usage of energy efficient appliances at its existing installations and offices, while the construction of any new installations would be in adherence to the green efficiency building codes. In the spirit of the agreement, KESC will also be conducting periodical energy audits and reviews of PIA’s offices, installations and residential colonies to ensure maximum savings and thereby also reducing the carbon foot print.
