Karachi West Zone police challaned only 33 cases out of 94 against extortionists in 2012

Karachi: Karachi West Zone police who claims having arrested 9807 accused including dacoits, robbers, land grabbers, drug peddlers, target killers, absconders, proclaimed offenders and extortionists during the year 2012, it challaned in the courts only 33 cases out of 94 registered against extortionists.

In an official report released Sunday, it said only 63 accused involved in extortion were arrested. Similarly, only 18 cases of land grabbing were registered of which 10 were challaned in the courts and 34 accused were arrested.

The report, presented in a meeting presided over by DIG West Zone Asif Aijaz Shaikh, 12827 raids were conducted and 361 encounters took place during which 12 dacoits were killed and 57 cops martyred during the period from January 01 to December 31, 2012.

It said 619accused were arrested during encounter while 605 absconders and proclaimed offenders were nabbed. Moreover, 56 target killers, 216 accused of other murder cases, 838 dacoits/robbers and 1865 drug peddlers also were rounded up.

The West Zone police registered 1243 cases against drug peddlers of which 1195 cases challaned in the courts.

Police claimed having recovered one antiaircraft gun, four MP5, 28 SMG/Kalashnikovs, 46 repeaters/shot guns, 56 rifles, 3049 pistols/revolvers, 7958 rounds, 3 bombs, 3 rocket launchers, 26 hand grenades, 168 rockets, 13 detonators and 20kg explosive material.
