IDB announces winners of prizes for women contributed to development

Jeddah (IINA) The Islamic Development Bank (IDB) Group announced Algeria and Palestine winners of the 12th edition of the IDB Prize for Women's Contribution to Development, under the individuals and organizations categories.

According to the announcement made by IDB President Dr. Bandar Hajjar, the prize under the individual's category will be awarded to Hamida Kettab of Algeria for her pioneering role in raising awareness and promoting and facilitating early detection of cancer. The prize under organization's category will be awarded to Dunya Center, a Palestinian women-led organization, for its outstanding work in providing screening, early detection, rehabilitation and survivorship services as well as offering information services to families of cancer-affected women.

This year's edition of the prize has been presented to women and women organizations that played a prominent role in promoting Women's Contribution to the Prevention and Control of Cancer.

Hajjar said that the selection process for the organizations and individuals was carried out by an independent committee of expert women representing different parts of the Islamic world.

The IDB Prize for Women's Contribution to Development was established in 2006, with a view to highlighting the important role played by Muslim women in developing local communities. Since then, the prizes have been awarded to 40 laureates under the individuals and organizations categories from 27 countries.

The winners will receive their award in a special ceremony to be held in conjunction with the 42nd Annual Meeting of IDB's Board of Governors, which will take place in Jeddah on May 17-18.
