Emir of Kuwait urges activating mechanisms of development work to tackle Islamic world problems

Makkah Emir of Kuwait Sheikh Sabah Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah called for activating mechanisms of development work to confront the problems of poverty, illiteracy and displacement in the Islamic world, the Union of OIC News Agencies (UNA) reported.

Addressing the 14th Ordinary Session of the Islamic Summit Conference in Makkah on Friday, the Emir said: A closer look at the reality of our Islamic nation clearly demonstrates that our nation lives in difficult situations."

Unfortunately, he said, the stature of the Islamic nation in the world, based on global rates and statistics is not satisfactory, where 37 percent of the Islamic world population live below the poverty line, totaling 507 million people; 61 percent of the displaced people worldwide are from the OIC countries; 40 percent of the Muslim world population is illiterate; and the unemployment rate in the Islamic world is over 7 percent.

He added that these figures are alarming and painful at the same time, and invite us to stand before them and think of their implications and make every effort to activate the mechanisms of development work, as well as supporting and raising these mechanisms to the level that meets the hopes and aspirations of the Muslim peoples.

Meanwhile, Sheikh Sabah Al-Ahmad called for dealing with the current developments in the region with utmost caution and making room for the efforts aimed at containing escalation and sparing the region tension and military confrontation.

He said the region and the entire Islamic nation are going through extreme and dangerous circumstances and unprecedented challenges, pointing out that the accelerating pace of escalation in the region foreshadows serious repercussions for the nation and its stability.

Sheikh Sabah expressed Kuwait's concern over the continued attacks on Saudi Arabia, which target its security, stability and the safety of its citizens. He affirmed Kuwait's condemnation and denunciation of these attacks and its full support for the Kingdom in defending its security and stability.

The Emir also voiced Kuwait's condemnation of the attacks against the commercial ships off the coast of the United Arab Emirates. He said these attacks constitute a threat to the security of the UAE and the stability of the region as a whole, as well as targeting the safety of maritime navigation and jeopardizing global energy supply.

Sheikh Sabah indicated that the Palestinian cause is the top priority of his country, lamenting the failure of efforts to resolve this issue and the continued suffering of the Palestinian people. He called on the international community to do its utmost to revive the peace process, reiterating that any solution to the Palestinian question must be based on the right of the Palestinian people to establish their independent state with East Jerusalem as its capital, pursuant to the resolutions of international legitimacy, the Arab Peace Initiative and the two-state solution.
