CNG closure: Karachi transporters warn of extreme step

Karachi: The Karachi Transport Ittehad (KTI), an alliance of 14 transport owners’ organizations, has called an urgent meeting on Saturday to devise future strategy in view of frequent and prolonged closure of CNG stations.

“The public transport has come to the verge of destruction due to closure of CNG stations from 48 to 72 hours. If this practice continued, there would be no public transport available to the 20 million people of Karachi and the government would be responsible entirely for such a situation,” Syed Irshad Hussain Bukhari and Syed Mahmood Afridi, president and general secretary respectively of KTI said in a joint statement on Friday.

They said when the CNG stations open after prolonged closure, certain CNG stations use to charge Rs.200 to 300 extra from each bus, minibus and coach for filling the gas. “If the CNG station owners did not mend their ways, the transporters would be compelled to take extreme step,” they warned.

The KTI leaders said that CNG station owners were multiplying the miseries of commuters by closing the gas stations.

They appealed the government and Supreme Court of Pakistan to take serious note of situation.
