Civil society leaders visit OPP office, express shock over Parveen’s murder

KARACHI: The representatives of leading civil society organisations of Karachi on Saturday visited the Orangi Pilot Project OPP office in Qasba Colony area to express solidarity with the staff and management team on the assassination of their senior colleague Ms Parveen Rehman on Thursday.

Prominent among them included Karamat Ali, Executive Director of Pakistan Institute of Labour Education and Research PILER; Dr. Kaiser Bengali, senior economist; Justice Retd. Majida Rizvi, Chairperson of Panah Trust; Anis Haroon of Women Action Forum; Zahid Farooque of Urban Resource Centre; Mir Zulfiqar Ali of NOW Communities; Advocate Rubina Jumani of Aurat Foundation; Prof Dr Riaz of Karachi University.

In his remarks, Anwar Rashid OPP Director expressed thanks to the civil society of Karachi for their support and said today a joint meeting of the OPP staff was held and it has been decided that we would work with a great zeal to fulfil all the unfinished agenda of late Parveen Rahman. “This is the way of our protest that we would work four times more than we were doing in her life,” he added.

He said OPP has been serving for oppressed and downtrodden people of Karachi as well other parts of the country. The civil organisations’ representatives offered their full support to the entire team of OPP and it was decided to hold a big condolence reference in the premises of OPP office and community people would also be invited.

The civil society representatives also visited various sections of OPP and a senior member Abdul Waheed Khan briefed them about various functions of the organisation. The visitors also imprinted their sentiments in the impressions book placed at the entrance of the OPP office.
