Arab League chief affirms priority of Geneva Process on political settlement in Syria

Munich Secretary General of the Arab League Ahmed Aboul-Gheit met here on Sunday with United Nations Special Envoy for Syria Staffan de Mistura, on the sidelines of the Munich Security Conference, currently being held in Munich, Germany.

During the meeting, the Arab League chief underlined the priority of the Geneva Process on the political settlement in Syria and the need to work to stop the human cost of the Syrian conflict.

In a statement, Arab League Secretary General's spokesman and Plenipotentiary Minister Mahmoud Afifi said Aboul-Gheit listened to an assessment by the UN envoy on the diplomatic efforts aimed at the settlement of Syria's conflict, in light of the UN-sponsored political process in the framework of the Geneva Process that focuses at the current stage on drafting a new constitution for Syria, which would open the way for a new political situation.

Aboul-Gheit stressed that, while everyone is aware of the changing field conditions in Syria, it is critically important that the international community should not lose the priority of the Geneva Process, based on Security Council resolution 2254, to provide the basis for any balanced and viable political settlement of this conflict, the spokesman added.
