639 dengue cases reported in Karachi during 2012, only two patients died

Karachi: As many as 639 cases of dengue fever were reported in Karachi during the year 2012 and only two deaths occurred so far, a meeting, presided over by Secretary Health, Sindh Aftab Khatri, was informed on Wednesday.

The dengue fever caused 16 deaths while the total number of cases reported in Karachi was 1326 during the year 2011. Out of these, 50 patients needed platelets but this year only 08 patients needed the platelets.

Reviewing the situation with regard to dengue cases, health secretary claimed that controlling the deaths due to dengue fever was possible only because of better strategy. “Availability of all the required medicines have been ensured at Sindh government’s hospitals besides setting up separate wards,” he said and added that Dengue Surveillance Cell is collecting the data on daily basis.

The officials told that fumigation was being carried out at residential areas. Special Secretary Health Dr. Suresh Kumar, Director Malaria Control, Sindh Dr. Naheed Jamal and other officers attended the meeting.
