Lahore: As many as 339122 cases of different crimes were registered in Punjab during ten months from January 01 to October 31, 2012 of which only 33642 were challaned, 34362 are under investigation, 23634 cases remained untraced while 33642 were cancelled, official data says.
During the period under report, 53439 criminals were convicted and 49517 were acquitted by the courts in various cases of previous years.
According to statistics of Punjab Police Department, 5367 cases of murder, 6620 cases of attempt to murder, 17814 cases of injuries, 13512 cases of kidnapping, 134 cases of kidnapping for ransom, 2279 cases of rape and 186 cases of gang-rape were registered during ten months. Surprisingly, 245 cases of murder, 504 cases of attempt to murder, 1592 cases of injuries, 6225 cases of kidnapping, 32 cases of kidnapping for ransom, 662 cases of rape and 37 cases of gang-rape were cancelled while 338 cases of murder, 408 cases of attempt to murder, 105 cases of injuring, 195 cases of kidnapping, 3 cases of kidnapping for ransom, 19 cases of rape and 2 cases of gang-rape were untraced.
As regards crimes against property, the statistics shows that 2604 cases of dacoity, 15507 cases of robbery, 12512 cases of burglary, 2164 cases of theft, 17454 cases of motor vehicle theft, 5869 cases of motor vehicle snatching, 7017 cases of cattle theft were registered during the period under report. Out of these, 250 cases of dacoity, 727 cases of robbery, 1202 cases of burglary, 413 cases of theft, 634 cases of motor vehicle theft, 230 cases of motor vehicle snatching and 974 cases of cattle theft were cancelled while 404 cases of dacoity, 3966 cases of robbery, 3312 cases of burglary, 398 cases of theft, 7056 cases of motor vehicle theft, 1325 cases of motor vehicle snatching and 329 cases of cattle theft remained untraced.
