UN: cholera outbreak kills 186 in Yemen

New York, (IINA) - A cholera outbreak has killed 186 people in Yemen during the last two weeks, the UN said Tuesday.

A state of emergency was declared in the Yemeni capital, Sana'a, late Sunday as the country's infrastructure and health system struggle to cope with the surge in cases of the disease.

The number of suspected cases has now exceeded 14,000, with 186 associated deaths, UN spokesman Stephane Dujarric told reporters, quoting figures from OCHA, UN's humanitarian arm.

OCHA is fast-tracking funds to help contain the outbreak, Dujarric said. Cholera, an acute diarrheal infection, is caused by ingestion of food or water contaminated with the bacterium Vibrio cholera.

Most of those infected show no or only mild symptoms, but the disease can kill within hours in severe cases that are left untreated.
