Abbas meets German counterpart; reiterates commitment to two-state solution

Ramallah � Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas reiterated his commitment to a just peace based on international resolutions, the two-state solution and the pursuit of an independent and sovereign state of Palestine on the 1967 lines with East Jerusalem as its capital.

He made the remarks following his meeting with German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier in Ramallah on Tuesday, during which both leaders discussed the latest developments in the region, including Abbas's recent visit to the United States and his meeting with President Donald Trump.

We reaffirm our commitment to peace based on justice, international legitimacy and the two-state solution, the pursuit of an independent and sovereign state of Palestine on the 1967 borders with East Jerusalem as its capital and living side by side with the State of Israel in security, peace and good-neighborly relations, Abbas said during a press conference with Steinmeier.

According to WAFA News Agency, President Abbas briefed his German counterpart on the efforts to bring freedom and independence to the Palestinian people as well as the issues discussed with President Trump, who accepted an invitation to visit Palestine and meet with Abbas in Bethlehem.

For his part, President Steinmeier underlined his continued support to building the Palestinian state and its institutions, in addition to supporting the infrastructure projects in order to improve living conditions of Palestinians, especially in the Israeli-controlled Area C of the West Bank.

Steinmeier expressed the keenness of the German government and people on the constant provision of assistance to build the institutions of the Palestinian state. He pointed out that the German-funded project to construct a school in the village of Qubeiba, west of Ramallah, will be completed by the end of this year.

The German president stressed that the two-state solution is the only viable way to resolve the Palestinian-Israeli conflict. He added that the U.S. has recently established contacts with the Palestinian and Israeli sides, underlining that this will lead to new meetings in the region.
